Notes

IBM CICS stands for (Customer Information Control System). CICS application programs authorize users to make database transaction requests. The CICS system is essentially a number of application servers that facilitate online transaction management processes. It is middleware that connects mainframe systems for the purpose of executing online transactions.

What are online transactions? Think automated teller machines (ATMs). When you want to withdraw money at an ATM you enter your code, request the money and the ATM spits out your bills. That's an online transaction. The same this happens when you buy something with a credit or debit card. CICS applications call the transactions and process them through a database (usually DB2). OLTP (online transaction processing) executes the online database transaction like those made by bank tellers, cashiers, etc. such as order entry, retail sales and other financial transactions.
