Overview
The client is seeking an experienced and self-motivated Structured Cabling Network Technician to support the installation, maintenance, and optimization of telecommunication and network infrastructure across VDOT facilities statewide.
This position involves fieldwork requiring travel within Virginia (including occasional overnight stays). The selected candidate must have a clean driving record, maintain active insurance coverage, and be comfortable working both independently and as part of a distributed network support team.

Position Summary
As part of the VDOT Network Support Team, the Structured Cabling Network Technician will design, install, test, and maintain data, voice, and fiber optic systems. The technician will also participate in process improvements, troubleshoot complex connectivity issues, and collaborate with vendors to ensure compliance with standards and quality expectations.
Primary Responsibilities

Design and document telecommunications and network architectures.

Install, test, and maintain structured cabling systems for data, voice, and fiber optics.

Oversee installations to ensure adherence to BICSI, safety, and VDOT standards.

Diagnose and repair technical issues, faulty cabling, and network equipment.

Perform routine system maintenance and equipment inspections.
-
Manage vendor relationships and support contracts; validate network service billings.
-
Research emerging telecommunications technologies and recommend improvements.
-
Prepare and maintain detailed technical documentation, reports, and manuals.
-
Collaborate with internal teams and external vendors to develop and implement solutions.

Review and update operational policies and procedures to improve efficiency.
Required Technical Expertise
-
Strong understanding of ISP/OSP copper and fiber connectivity.
-
Hands-on experience with Cat3, Cat5e, Cat6a, and fiber optic installation and termination.
-
Deep knowledge of single-mode and multi-mode fiber optic cables.
-
Experience in data and telecommunications system installation, testing, and inspection (10+ years preferred).

Familiarity with networking concepts including OSI Layers 1–4, TCP/IP, UDP, ICMP, MPLS, VoIP, cellular, and 5G technologies.

Proficiency using network testing tools such as Fluke Versiv (light meter), OTDR, DYMO labeler, and copper toner probe kits.

Knowledge of telecommunications standards and safety protocols (BICSI).

Proficiency with Microsoft Office tools (Outlook, Word, Excel, Visio, Teams).
Preferred Qualifications

10+ years of experience in data and telecommunications system deployment and maintenance.

10+ years supporting multi-site networks in enterprise environments.

2+ years of experience in documenting network topologies and researching emerging technologies.

Familiarity with VoIP, fiber optics, routing/subnetting, and IP network concepts.
Physical & Field Requirements

Valid driver’s license and ability to travel statewide (including overnight stays).

Ability to carry and climb ladders (6ft–10ft).

Must be able to see and distinguish colors, read small print, and recognize audible signals.

Comfortable working in new construction, renovation, and active office environments.
