Solution Architect



The Solution Architect is responsible for the delivery and maintenance of solution designs for Customer Identity and Profile Management (CIPM) digital projects. These solutions need to be fit for purpose, have technical integrity, the right TCO (total cost of ownership) through its life cycle and comply with Architecture Principles, Guidelines and Handrails and where that is not possible, supported under clearly defined step-outs. The resultant Solution Architecture High Level Design (or SAHLD) have a measurable impact on the effectiveness and profitability of Shell.
Responsibilities include:

  1. Provide solution architecture development, consultancy and assurance, making sure applications are well designed and conform to Shell standards and reference/segment architectures.
  2. Documenting, improving & maintaining the Solution Architecture overviews.
  3. Follow IT Technology developments in the market and leverage this knowledge in architecting and designing solutions in Shell. Ensure solutions are ‘future-proof’.
  4. Provide solution designs to the scrum teams, making sure that these maintain the overall product consistency and architecture.
  5. Work closely with the business stakeholders, primarily the Product Owner, to ensure that the business requirements are being met but also to challenge the PO on requirements that don’t fit the product or don’t add enough business value for their technical cost.
  6. Work closely with Risk Management, Operations and other IT stakeholders to ensure that their non-functional requirements are included in the designs.
  7. Reducing and eliminating technical debt. Making sure the product is healthy from a technology perspective, so that it can be easily developed and maintained in short release cycles. Add refactoring items to the product backlog where required to remove technical debt.
  8. Owning the coding standards for the product, to ensure that development results in good quality code so that the product stays maintainable over time. Keep these standards up-to-date and undertake code reviews if required to ensure standards are being met.
  9. Maintaining estimation framework for vendors. Being able to challenge vendors on estimation of development work to ensure good value in output based contracts.
