We are hiring Line Cook/Prep Cook for one of our clients in Fort Belvoir, VA.
Job Description:
- The Cook is responsible for preparing and serving nutritious meals to residents of the homeless shelter, ensuring food safety and hygiene standards are strictly maintained.
- This role involves planning menus, managing inventory, preparing ingredients, cooking and presenting meals, and accommodating dietary restrictions when possible.
- The Cook also contributes to a positive and supportive environment by interacting respectfully with residents and contributing to the overall cleanliness and organization of the kitchen and dining areas.
- The position requires prolonged standing, lifting up to 50 pounds, and repetitive motions
Skills Required:
- Prepares and serves nutritional and well-balanced meals for each mealtime occurring during their shifts.
- Prepares food from the five basic groups to ensure guest/clients are eating healthy food.
- Prepares and distributes bag lunches and/or late dinners for working guest/residents.
- Assists with adequate stocking of the refrigerator and self-service areas and cleaning of kitchen and equipment regularly to ensure sanitary food preparation conditions.
- Adheres to health department regulations.
- Properly store food and other donations from the community.
- Accounts for all donations received during the shift.
- Controls access to donations as appropriate.
- Issue receipts to donors. o Prepares food baskets for off-site guest/residents, as requested.
- Experience preparing and serving meals typically in a setting where individuals have special dietary or nutritional requirements.
- Responsible for keeping all donated and left over food items labeled with date and content of food.
- Responsible for safety by ensuring areas are properly sanitized and cleaning up any spills or messes that may harm guest/residents or employees.
- Responsible for sweeping, mopping, and vacuuming floors, keeping Kitchen clean and sanitized after each meal served.
- Responds to in-person and telephone inquiries from the public.
- With a courteous and professional demeanor.
- Works with volunteers who are assigned to help in the kitchen, giving them directions and answering questions.
- Participates in all staff meetings.
- Provides a positive role model for guest/residents.
- Works flexible hours including late evenings, early morning, weekends, and over nights as assigned.
- Models a caring, concerned, and respectful attitude toward guest/residents.
- Is familiar with and complies with policies and procedures of the program
- Clean and Sanitize the Keep after each meal.
- Complete weekly Inventory of the Cleaning Supplies and Foods on hand
- Performs other duties as assigned
Experience Required:
- Minimum 1 year of experience working as a cook
Experience Preferred
- Experience working as a Cook in a homeless shelter, senior leaving or similar human services facility
Education Required:
- HS diploma or GED Food Handlers card highly preferred
