Job Summary:

The Houston Museum of Natural Science is looking to hire a web manager to execute strategies to manage and maintain a dynamic and user-friendly web environment indicative of the museum mission to promote a museum of the first class. The Web Manager, under the direction of the IT Director, oversees the functionality of the museum websites, evaluates and manages site performance, facilitates hosting, and maintains and updates website content as directed.


  • Contributing to and executing strategies for website and email optimization to support organizational goals; requires the need to plan, implement, manage, monitor, and upgrade the organization’s websites and marketing/transactional email systems.
  • Own the user experience, monitor performance and propose continuous improvements and key metrics such as traffic, conversion, store volume and standard email metrics.
  • Recommend action plans through data-driven insights and execute with efficiency.
  • Collaborate with all staff and management to ensure that the website aligns with brand strategy and meets the organization’s standards.
  • Conduct web content audits to eliminate redundant and/or duplicate information.
  • Communicate with relevant stakeholders to solicit updated web content as necessary in a timely fashion.
  • Rapidly respond to and troubleshoot all website and email distribution issues.
  • Ensures successful and timely deployment of marketing email messages
  • Share email best practices and recent email results with sales and marketing teams on a regular basis.
  • Evaluates all outbound automated email content for effectiveness and coordinates strategy shifts where necessary.
  • Coordinates and monitors the maintenance, upkeep, customization, and security of the marketing email database to ensure non-deliverable and opt-out emails are suppressed from future email campaigns.
  • Recommend strategies to grow email subscriber base and improve web traffic metrics.
  • Ensure that the website is protected by enabling the appropriate security measures; identify and respond to all website security breaches.
  • Ensure full web and email compliance with all laws and regulations. Keep up-to-date with industry best practices and monitor competitor websites.
  • Thrive in an entrepreneurial, high-energy environment that requires the ability to multi-task and quickly and accurately implement high priority initiatives.
  • Perform related duties as assigned by the supervisor.
  • Maintain compliance with all company policies and procedures.

Essential Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Strong communication skills, including the ability to effectively communicate with internal and external constituents.
  • Strong time management skills, willingness and flexibility to take on and accomplish multiple varying assignments in a fast-paced environment
  • Ability to oversee several projects concurrently and meet deadlines effectively.
  • Ability to work under pressure while maintaining a positive attitude and providing exemplary customer service.
  • Ability to work independently and to carry out assignments to completion within parameters of instructions given prescribed routines, and standard accepted practices


  • Bachelor’s Degree in related field or 5+ years experience
  • Website management experience
  • Experience using a CMS (Content Management System) in a professional environment (WordPress, Magento)
  • Experience in email/communication distribution systems (Mail Chimp, Constant Contact)
  • Firm understanding of HTML, CSS, PHP, JavaScript, responsive web design, web-graphic formats, and industry best practices
  • SQL database understand a plus
  • Site theme development a plus
  • Proficient in Google and Facebook Ads and Analytics
  • Proficient in Google Suite (Gmail, Drive, Docs, etc.)
  • Proficient in Microsoft Suite (Word, Excel, etc.)
