Title : Technical Writer Location : Rockville, Maryland Duration : Fulltime Job Description: Candidates in this role complete information development projects (create, update, and enhance documentation which includes but is not limited to help systems, user manuals, and supporting documentation for internal and external clients), lead teams, and keep information deliverables organized and on schedule. They design and develop elements for user interface (UI), web, multimedia delivery, print, and other linear and non-linear information deliverables. The role independently supports assigned product(s) and is responsible for networking with and leading discussions with subject matter experts, developers, product managers, project managers, quality assurance, business analysts, and others to support those products; this includes working with the teams to determine deliverables and schedules, collaborating with team on content development coordinating document reviews, and eliciting feedback. The candidate applies appropriate technical writing, editing, multimedia, visual design and tools skills, as required and independently coordinates all aspects of the assigned documentation-including delivery schedule, and preparation of documentation plans and work estimates. The candidate focuses on individual/team/department/operational objectives and should be innovative, self-motivated individuals who are comfortable working in a fast-paced, agile environment. Essential Duties/Responsibilities Independently support assigned product(s) using standard technical writing tools and methods. Responsible for networking with and leading discussions with subject matter experts, developers, product managers, project managers, quality assurance, business analysts, and others to support those products. Independently coordinate all aspects of the assigned documentation-including delivery schedule, and preparation of documentation plans and work estimates. Work with product teams to determine schedules and deliverables. Collaborates with team members to develop content. Ability to coordinate document reviews with teams and elicit feedback. Provide time estimates to product teams based on project scope provided by Offering Management. Job Qualifications Required Knowledge and Attributes Demonstrated writing skills in English. Enthusiasm for creating accurate, concise user documentation. High attention to detail and strong time management skills. Ability to produce grammatically and typographically correct documentation that complies with the style that exists in the established documentation set. Demonstrated ability to act on the results of customer feedback surveys and formal or informal usability tests. Demonstrated ability to index or apply keywords to complex documentation sets. Demonstrated effective visual design skills (use of white space, illustrations and graphics Ability to consistently apply company branding, including standard fonts, logos, and service marks. Demonstrated understanding of accepted technical writing concepts, editorial standards, and methods, such as would be acquired in a formal Technical Writing degree or certificate program. Demonstrated ability to produce work that is consistent with corporate or professional style guides such as IBM Style or the Microsoft Manual of Style. Demonstrated knowledge of information architecture as it pertains to help system concepts such as workflow, context-sensitive help, minimalism, and usability. Demonstrated ability to work independently with minimal supervision. Aptitude to prepare content for new or emerging products and technologies, for example, chatbot conversations. Proven problem-solving skills, especially as it pertains to the development of new and more efficient processes and tools to produce help systems. Proven familiarity with technical writing concepts and tool currency. Communicate with other peers, including writers, product designers, user experience specialists. Strong customer focus. Required Skills Ability to understand highly-specialized software features and produce user-friendly, process-driven content that helps users complete tasks. Mastery of Microsoft Office tools, especially Word and Excel. Familiarity with popular, single-sourcing authoring tools, for example, Madcap Flare, Adobe Framemaker, and GitHub Pages. Basic knowledge of HTML, XML. Familiarity with version control systems (e.g., GitHub Strong experience with graphics tools, screen capture and manipulation of graphics. Communicate effectively, often with remote teams, to collaborate, collect information, troubleshoot. Ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously. Flexibility with changing product schedules, including special scheduling to accommodate remote teams' time zones. Understand the varying needs of different audiences, for example, healthcare specialists, IT administrators, non-technical end users. Basic workstation maintenance, including program installation, routine updates, and troubleshooting. Required Education and/or Experience Bachelor's Degree in English, Journalism, Information Sciences, Computer Science, or a related field. Minimum 3 to 5 years of experience as a technical writer
