EPI - POSITION OVERVIEW
The Epidemiologist 1 position will support quantitative and qualitative evaluation efforts of the Tennessee Department of Health (TDH), Division of Health Disparities Elimination (DHDE). The position will develop and test specific tools and instruments to capture, organize, and analyze information related to focus groups, key informant interviews, thematic reviews, surveys, EHR extracts, and other data collection methods as appropriate. Developing data collection tools via REDCap, conducting basic descriptive epidemiologic analyses, and developing reports are core functions of the position. The position will create data models, visualizations, charts, tables, and other resources for use by non-technical users both internal and external to the Department. The position will also identify and report meaningful metrics to gauge progress on projects and provide data driven recommendations for the future.
RESPONSIBILITIES/WORK ACTIVITIES
The position's responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:
  • Facilitate collaborative meetings with DHDE staff, grantees, and contractors in designing and executing plans for program data collection and analysis in alignment with federal and state specific strategies and work plans.
  • Manage multiple projects and job duties through efficient task management, including status meetings, weekly reports, and identification, tracking, and resolution of problems and issues.
  • Research quantitative and qualitative methods and recommend certain approaches.
  • Analyze data using Excel, SAS, SPSS, MS Access, thematic review software, or other applications as needed.
  • Provide technical assistance and guidance to staff and key partners (internal and external) on data collection methods, reporting, and analysis.
  • Communicate and disseminate information to DHDE staff, grantees, contractors, and stakeholders verbally and in writing related to program activities as well as findings from various analyses.
KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS & ABILITIES
The position's knowledge and skills include, but are not limited to, the following:
  • Demonstrated ability to gather, organize, analyze, and interpret data.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop effective, insightful data visualizations.
  • Experience with REDCap, Tableau and/or statistical software such as R, SAS, STATA, or SPSS
  • Demonstrated experience leading projects with multiple stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated time management skills and proven ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously while completing work within allocated time frames.
  • Outstanding written and verbal communications skills, including the ability to communicate effectively with both technical and Client audiences.
· Superior analytical and problem-solving skills, working both individually and as part of a team.
· Ability to work collaboratively across programs and offices and interact with all levels of departmental staff, the public, and other governmental and non-governmental entities.
· Knowledge of analytical and evaluation methods to evaluate policies, programs, and issues.
· Good understanding of databases
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
· Graduation from an accredited college or university with a master's degree in epidemiology, public health, biostatistics, statistics, health informatics, health science, biomedical science, or environmental science field with experience equivalent to two years' work experience in epidemiology
· Master's degree in public health or other quantitatively based social science education is desirable.
· Public health experience is a plus.
OTHER REQUIREMENTS/INFORMATION
· This is a hybrid position and must be available to report to the office at minimum 1 or 2 times per month or more as needed.
· The candidate must reside in or be willing to relocate to Tennessee.
· The work week will be part-time 25 hours per week.
