Director of DevOps Platform Engineering

 

The purpose of the Engineering Director is to guide, develop and coach DevOps teams working in incident response and network operations centre. The role includes overseeing the technical delivery and performance of the teams operating in a 24/7 environment. The Engineering Director must ensure appropriate resourcing and team structures, providing technical support to the scrum teams. Furthermore, the Director must drive the reduction of technical debt according to the roadmap set forth by the Technology Leader and ensure the implementation of technical standards and that development occurs within.

 

You draw from a deep and broad technical expertise to mentor team members, lead by example, and provide leadership on complex technology issues in the organisation. While you should possess deep problem solving and resolution skills, you spend majority of your time building and nurturing great talent and building a team that learns from each incident and iteratively improves every week.

As a director, you will demonstrate the following characteristics: -

·       You have extensive practical experience gained from working as an operational leader in a federated / devops organisation and typically answer directly to the senior management of your company. Leadership skills and communication skills are crucial in your work.

·       You are creative and come up with innovative approaches to problem-solving and any issues that arise.

·       You are a “doer”. You get things done.

·       You are able to understand strategic thinking and how to apply it to the work you are doing.

·       Setting goals and implementing them.

·       Sharing expertise and insight with operations SME and engineers.

·       Motivating staff and fostering collaboration.

The ideal candidate has experience leading a 24x7 operations and understands the software development lifecycle in a hybrid devOps environment. Helping shape the products and engineering teams to ensure a consistent focus on quality and customer happiness. The candidate should have relevant experience in operating customer journeys and technology services built from highly complex integration of technology products and platforms.

Key Responsibilities

·       Lead the Technology Operations Centre, accountable for critical incident response, crisis management and pro-active incident resolution.

·       Drive critical incident management and network operations strategy, roadmap and direction through stakeholder management, engineering leadership, and outward customer communications.

·       Help drive cultural change in the operational environment with the support of SRE principles, observability and automation.

·       Communicate with technical and executive leadership to articulate critical incident resolution and execution plans.

·       Drive standardisation and automation of incident process to provide best-in-class incident resolution and operational availability towards customers

·       Provide leadership, coaching and performance management for operational teams working 24x7 across locations.

·       Set the technical standards for the engineering teams and build onboarding framework, guardrails given to integrate into technology operations centre

·       Hire and develop high quality operational experts and engineers while strengthening morale and cohesion across the teams.

·       Lead by example – active participation in critical incidents and crisis management calls to support the team and remove bottlenecks and identify improvements.

·       Speak with data – build operational reporting, metrics and insights that will enable iterative improvements within the team and across our organization.

·       Working with teams across the organization to deliver outcomes for the business stakeholders to improve availability, reliability and performance of technology solutions.

·       Leading lean thinking across teams, focusing on removal of waste in process and handoff points across the lifecycle

·       Owner of objectives key results/performance indicator framework and metrics reporting; reporting on team effectiveness (e.g. time to value, release cadence, availability)

·       Collaborate with multi-functional teams to develop a comprehensive understanding of the key drivers and opportunities within the business.
