The project: You'll be working on a full stack team building Terra (), a flexible open-source platform that allows researchers to perform data analysis in the cloud at previously unattainable scales. Scientists around the world use this platform every day to power world-renowned genomic and medical research, including ground breaking research on COVID-19. Terra is a collaboration between the Broad Institute, Verily Life Sciences, and Microsoft.

The team: We are seeking a skilled engineer to be a technical leader on a team developing Terra's Batch Analysis tools. This includes Cromwell a scalable workflow management system geared towards bioinformatics and scientific workflows. Your role will include:

  • Applying your existing engineering expertise to build Terra's batch analysis capabilities.
  • Integrating with multiple cloud providers (GCP & Azure)
  • Improving tooling, code, testing, CI/CD, and development processes to increase engineering productivity and satisfaction
  • Working with our UX team to build corresponding UI features
  • Mentoring engineers

Requirements:

  • 7+ years of Software Development experience is preferred, though exceptional candidates with less will be considered.
  • Experience as a technical leader on a collaborative team.
  • Experience delivering clear, maintainable, and well-tested software in a timely manner.
  • Experience with or interest in working with a wide variety of technologies and on diverse problems.
  • Experience working with users to develop and document requirements.
  • Excellent organizational, communications, and leadership skills.
  • Strong communicator, capable of leading progress on a team through collaboration and influence.
  • Committed to fostering a diverse and inclusive team.

Any of the following is a plus:

  • Familiarity with cloud environments (e.g., GCP, Azure, AWS, etc.).
  • Familiarity with Scala, Akka, and Java.
  • Familiarity with databases and SQL programming
  • Familiarity with big data processing pipelines (e.g., WDL, CWL, Google Cloud Life Sciences API).
  • Familiarity with containers and Kubernetes.
  • Familiarity with infrastructure-as-code (e.g., Terraform, Helm).
  • Experience troubleshooting complex distributed systems.
