Optum Clinical Manager (OCM) is a strategic, enterprise clinical platform across UHC and Optum that leverages shared technology and services. As an integrated, cloud native, scalable technology platform, OCM delivers seamless end-to-end clinical solutions that are configurable, resilient and quick to build while reducing overall enterprise technology costs. It supports a multi-payer, multi-tenant model, enabling care management, utilization management and digital capabilities.


In this role as an Engineering Director, you will be responsible for partnering with business, architecture, and product stakeholders to help design, plan and deliver innovative solutions in bringing digital clinical capabilities to prospects, consumers, and health plan members. You will be working collaboratively as an engineering leader to transform our technology portfolio into a digital-native platform using contemporary and emerging trends in architecture and technology. The work you lead will have a direct impact on our customers to make Enterprise Clinical platform of choice.

As an Engineering Leader, you will lead group of engineers to produce a highly available, highly scalable quality product/platform. This is a challenging role that will include leading the transformation of our engineering, data, and architecture teams to strengthen and grow our multi-channel distribution capabilities. This position will have direct reports.

Primary Responsibilities:



  • Lead engineering team for conceptualizing, designing, developing, and maintaining vital elements of Clinical Platform

  • Raise the bar on excellence in execution in terms of quality, timeliness, and scalability

  • Take accountability for Key Engineering Metrics of the platform namely Availability, response time metrics, Time to Value and Time to build

  • Develop and Evolve Engineering and product roadmap of OCM 20

  • Collaborate with counterparts in other Geographical locations to ensure smooth execution of critical projects across the board

  • Drive talent transformation as per the needs of Business

  • Key leadership responsibility in Enterprise Clinical Platform team to plan and develop talent, process, and capabilities within the organization

  • Recommends applicable technical patterns and solutions that are aligned with architectural guiding principles and standards through a regular cadence of delivery and continuous improvement initiatives

  • Deep technical expertise to review designs and architectures

  • Collaborates closely with Product and Capability Architects on aligning inferred Solutions and Enterprise architecture to granular technical patterns and solutions

  • Drives technology modernization activities with architects and engineering teams including a shift to modular, data centric, open-source, and cloud-native technologies

  • Governs technical debt and promotes balance with Technical Product Management in achieving architectural objectives through influencing of Product, Capability, and Engineering backlogs

  • Works closely with Technical Product Owners in plotting required Enablers to support business feature teams on the Architecture Runway, ensuring full lifecycle delivery through CI / CD pipeline

  • Improve Engineering culture of the team

Required Qualifications:



  • Bachelor?s degree or equivalent work experience in an Information Technology related field

  • 8+ years of related IT experience as a developer, engineer, architect, or similar role

  • 5+ years of proven leadership experience of running complex, large IT projects

  • 5+ years of proven people management experience

  • 5+ years of experience in modern full stack applications using open-source languages including Java, SpringBoot, .NET Core, and data technologies including T-SQL, NoSQL, and GraphQL

  • 3+ years of technical experience with designing contemporary digital platforms based on microservices patterns, data and event-driven services, & composition and orchestration through low / no-code solutions using Spring Boot, Spring Security, Spring ORM, Spring Rest, Spring Cloud, Kafka, Angular/React, REST/GraphQL

  • Understanding of API based data integration techniques/processes


Preferred Qualifications:



  • Experience working in the healthcare sector

  • 5+ years of experience working with an Agile development methodology

  • 3+ years of experience in working in cloud-enabled solutions in Azure or AWS

  • High proficiency of both written and verbal English communication

Colorado, Connecticut or Nevada Residents Only: The salary range for Colorado/Connecticut/Nevada residents is $110,200 to $211,700. Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to education, work experience, certifications, etc. In addition to your salary, UnitedHealth Group offers benefits such as, a comprehensive benefits package, incentive and recognition programs, equity stock purchase and 401k contribution (all benefits are subject to eligibility requirements).
