IHME has an outstanding temporary, full-time opportunity for a Web Application and Integration Developer to join our team. We are looking for an individual to develop innovative ways of incorporating IHME’s rich data APIs and visualizations into Microsoft Office add-ins. These new tools will enable researchers at IHME and beyond to more easily utilize our vast collection of data when writing research papers, reports, presentations, and more. These research products are highly visible and have been featured in news outlets, journal publications, and online resources; they are also instrumental in helping policymakers around the world make informed decisions to improve people’s health. The Web Application and Integration Developer will have the opportunity to continue to push the envelope of what is possible with sharing data-driven products, and help improve health for people around the world.


RESPONSIBILITIES:

Software Design and Implementation

Design Microsoft Office add-ins to enable users to quickly query IHME’s data APIs from within Office and integrate that information into Word documents, Excel spreadsheets, or PowerPoint presentations
Architect a flexible add-in specification that will be extensible to new restful APIs
Design and build an intuitive GUI for interacting with IHME APIs from within an Office add-in
Work closely and iterate quickly with IHME researchers and other stakeholders
Develop innovative ways to leverage data exploration in the scientific research and publication process
Ensure visual appeal of the tools and swift performance with large quantities of indicators and data
Manage all code used for the add-in system in a code versioning system to enable internal collaboration and documentation

Research Learning
Develop an understanding of the key outputs of the Global Burden of Disease project and their importance
Consult with researchers to determine how those outputs are most commonly used
Learn the structure of internal databases and APIs in order to understand how those outputs are stored
Become familiar with IHME’s current suite of data visualizations and their implementation.

REQUIREMENTS:

Bachelor’s degree in computer science or related field, plus two years'' related experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except where there are legal requirements such as license/certification/registration.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
Experience developing JavaScript visualization tools or web applications using React, D3.js, Angular, jQuery, or similar libraries
Understanding of common application design patterns and architectures, such as model-view-controller frameworks
Demonstrated understanding of data querying principles, user experience, and aesthetics
Ability to innovate, work independently, and work successfully in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment
Desire to understand and promote global health research
Strong interest in learning new skills

DESIRED:

Experience with the Microsoft Office add-ins and/or Sharepoint platforms
Strong quantitative aptitude and ability to interpret complex analytic information
Familiarity with how academic research papers and presentations are written
Experience visualizing large, complex, and frequently changing datasets
Understanding of scientific research and statistical analysis
Experience working and communicating effectively with academic and scientific researchers
Knowledge of version control systems like Git and Subversion.
A passion for cutting-edge Web technologies
