Linux Systems Engineer Team Lead

Lincolnshire, IL

6+ months contract

Summary:

The Linux Systems Engineer Team Lead will be responsible for implementing, administering and monitoring the high availability production network environments

Responsibilities:

· Deliver solutions that improve the stability and security of our Linux environment

· Defines Linux Operating System installation and security standards

· Tracks vulnerabilities and oversees the application appropriate patches and upgrades

· Writes scripts to automate multiple administrative tasks

· Proactively monitors and addresses issues with system performance and capacity

· Installs, configures, and documents new servers and applications

· Maintains and audits system security configuration and logs

· Responds rapidly to system maintenance needs, including on weekends and evenings

· Works with the team to develop system administration operations documentation

· Oversees and manages the installation of software tools providing systems level monitoring

· Take ownership of escalated technical issues, and lead them to closure

· Provide and maintain the overall operational quality, service delivery and security compliance

· Generate and drive Continuous Improvement initiatives aimed at improving business performance

· Provide on call support for critical production issues.

· Mentor and train team members to be help provide support independently.

· Be the Linux team's face to other IT teams and the business

· Assist in evaluation of new products, solutions, and technologies

· Liaise with other IT teams and technology vendors so as to find solutions for complex issues

· Participates in developing disaster recovery procedures and operations

· Create architecture documentation and standard operating procedure documents

· Research and recommend innovative, and where possible, automated approaches for system administration tasks. Identify approaches that leverage resources.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

· Ability to communicate clearly and effectively with management, development teams and system administrators

· Experience in administering Linux systems in a complex environment

· Experience with backup, recovery, monitoring and tuning of Linux systems

· Ability to handle multiple projects and deadlines

· Must be a self-starter, work independently as well as with a diverse and global technical team, and take ownership

· Proven ability to mentor and lead more junior staff while still being extremely hands-on

· Ability to solve complex problems and handle unforeseen problems when they occur

· Ability to work effectively in a team environment

· Possess superior organizational skills

· Ability to adapt to rapidly changing technologies

· Ability to work a flexible schedule including evenings and weekends as needed


Skills/Knowledge:

· B.S. in Computer Science, Engineering, or equivalent

· 24x7 production environment

· Experience with various Linux distributions: RedHat, CentOS, Ubuntu, etc

· Experience with Virtualization, specifically VMWare ESXi and fail-over scenarios

· Experience working with clustered / load-balanced servers

· Shell, Perl, and/or Python scripting

· Apache configurations and web server admin tasks

· Knowledge with Operating System and network security (firewalls and system hardening)

· Experience with SAN and NAS (network attached storage) solutions
