Lead efforts to standardize and automate network deployments and support

- Provide engineering, operational, administration, and monitoring support for multiple network environments within MITRE.

- Provide engineering, operational, administration, and monitoring support for multiple network environments.

- Troubleshoot complex network problems including; routing and switching, protocol problems, and WAN/LAN failures.

- Assist in development and implementation of network infrastructure based designs, implementation plans, test plans and operational models.

- Develop effective technical and support documentation for use by engineering and operations staff

- Maximize network performance by monitoring performance, troubleshooting network problems and outages, scheduling upgrades.

- Be effective as lead engineer for high-visibility projects

- Must be able to participate in a 7x24 on-call rotation approximately 4 to 5 times yearly.

- Must be able to act as escalation point for operational issues and support.

- Must be able to work in and around data closets, racks, and be able to lift 40lbs. 

Required Skills: 

- Demonstrable experience in programming methods/languages such as Shell Scripting, Expect, Perl, Python, PHP.

- Familiar with industry practices around configuration automation and standardization

- Knowledge of automation tools such as Chef, Puppet, or Ansible.

- Demonstrable experience managing network infrastructure in a hands-off fashion

- Demonstrable experience turning requirements into complete network design and implementation plans in a multi-site service-based environment.

- Demonstrable experience evaluating the performance of communications networks.

- Strong understanding of the OSI stack with a focus on layers 1-4. Detailed understanding of:

o Data link layer with a focus on Ethernet based protocols.

o Network layer focusing on IP and network services such as routing, switching, multicast, QoS, GRE/IPSec tunneling, Domain Name Service (DNS), Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP), Address Resolution Protocol (ARP

o Transport layer and the impact of operating over degraded networks.

- Knowledge of design/deployment/sustainment of the following protocols/technologies in an enterprise production environment:

o Routing protocols, such as (OSPF, EIGRP, BGP, IS-IS)

o Spanning Tree Protocol


o IPv6

o QoS

- Familiarity with network management concepts including fault identification/isolation, configuration, and performance management.

- Knowledge of network monitoring tools such as Splunk, Cacti, MRTG/RRDTool, Cisco Prime, Netbrain etc.

- Understanding of DNS & DHCP protocols and functions.

- Understanding of network security technologies including Intrusion Detection, Firewalls, demilitarized zones (DMZs), Virtual Private Networks (VPNs), security information and event management (SIEM), and common network level vulnerabilities.

- Hands-on experience designing and configuring complex networks including working with multiple vendors such as Cisco, Juniper, etc.

- Hands-on experience monitoring and troubleshooting IP based networks using commercial and open source tools

- Effective interpersonal, customer service and presentation skills.

- Strong written, verbal, briefing, analytical, and organizational skills.

ITIL Framework familiarity 

Minimum Education/ Experience  BS and 3 years related experience.
