Mercer University invites applications for an Assistant Professor of Mathematics and Computer Science, a nine month, tenure-track position in Mercer University’s Penfield College. The individual selected for the position will teach courses and advise graduate and undergraduate students in support of the University’s informatics programs, as well as teach general education mathematics courses on Mercer University’s Atlanta campus, in Mercer’s Regional Academic Centers, and online. Applicants with research-based knowledge and work experience in at least one of the following areas will be given preference: statistics, statistical modeling, mathematical modeling, data science, data mining, computer programming.

The individual selected for this position will have opportunities to shape the informatics programs and to design new programs to address changes in the field and to meet developing interests of students. The successful candidate will work within a collegial and active interdisciplinary department with faculty comprised of both dedicated teachers and motivated researchers.

Responsibilities include teaching the equivalent of six or seven courses (depending on graduate teaching load) each academic year in traditional and non-traditional formats; advising students; mentoring students involved in research and related writing; serving on department and college committees; developing research; and contributing to the University’s mission.


Requirements for the position include a doctoral degree from a regionally accredited college/university; academic credentials and experience related to mathematics and computer science; evidence of excellence in teaching or potential for excellence in teaching in face-to-face and web-enhanced formats; evidence of research experience and scholarly writing; and evidence of potential for establishing a successful record of scholarly activity.

Professional experience in a mathematics and/or computer science position in a corporate, government, or nonprofit organization and credentials and/or experience in the field of statistics and/or data science are highly desirable. Professional accomplishments that demonstrate creativity and energy, self-direction, and the ability to work with a highly motivated and diverse team are important attributes of the successful candidate.
