Windows/Linux Server Engineer
Arlington, VA
Contract
This position supports the Information Technology department and is a member of the Server Engineering team. The candidate will be responsible for managing and performing daily operational tasks supporting Windows and Linux servers. The candidate needs to be self-motivated and have excellent communication skills.
Candidate Requirements and Qualifications:
Bachelors of Science in related Information Technology field (e.g. Computer Science, Information technology etc or equivalent experience
Strong verbal and written communication skills
2+ years of work experience with VMWare
4+ -Experience in delivering recurring build releases that update the operating system and bundled components that ensure compliance with required patches and version upgrades
Ability to work collaboratively with stakeholders and peers
Operating system proficiency in Microsoft and Linux
Hardware proficiency in the server environment
Understanding the technique of a Blue-green environment that reduces downtime
Scripting skills such as PowerShell (Windows) and equivalent shell scripting (Linux)
Experienced with SQL language (queries, views, and stored procedures)
Familiarity with storage systems and backup products
Experience with Active Directory, DNS, Certificate Services, and Group Policy
Familiar with Amazon Web Services is a plus
Demonstrates flexibility in prioritizing and completing tasks; and working collaboratively with the client to identify and solve key constraints, risks and issues
Familiar with Change Management protocols
Assist with network and application troubleshooting along with technical consulting support

Candidate Duties and Responsibilities:
Build servers for both Windows and Linux in the virtual and physical environments
Update and manage work using the JIRA ticketing system
Apply required server patches to remediate vulnerabilities and support Microsoft’s monthly cycle using LANDesk LDMS.
Troubleshooting server health and performance issues to ensure a stable environment
Understand and apply appropriate group policies
Attend team meeting
take ownership of problems/tasks/projects and work them through completion
identify, analyze and resolve system bottlenecks related to system hardware and or software in a timely manner
Server lifecycle management
Server storage and backups
