Senior System Administrator

The Senior System Administrator position is responsible for the installation, configuration, operation and maintenance of systems hardware, operating systems, and related infrastructure. The position monitors system performance for all environments and maintains optimal systems availability. The position participates in technical research and development to enable continuing innovation within the infrastructure. The position also assists project teams as required, and provides third-level support to the BIS Support Center on system issue resolution.

The Senior System Administrator is a subject matter expert in one or more of the following areas: Microsoft Exchange, Microsoft Skype for Business, Microsoft System Center Suite, Storage Area Networks, VMware and Windows Server OS.


Works with limited supervision to monitor and maintain systems hardware, operating systems, and related infrastructure to ensure reliable operation

Capacity planning, monitoring, Disaster Recovery, and Business Continuity for all servers and storage systems

Produce and maintain documentation for use in the installation, configuration, operation and maintenance of systems hardware, operating systems, and related infrastructure

Research system issues to determine root cause, and work with the NetOps team to implement a plan of action to resolve these issues

Coordinate with service providers, vendors and various teams throughout First Command to ensure timely communication and resolution of all issues

Required to be on-call and available for special duties outside normal working hours



Preferred - Bachelor Degree in computer science or similar field

Work Experience

Required: 5 - 7 years working in a Windows multi-domain environment supporting a minimum of 300 servers and 1500 employees

Prefer experience with the following technologies: Microsoft Windows Server 2016/2012/2008, Active Directory, Microsoft System Center Suite, Microsoft Exchange 2016/2013, Microsoft Lync 2013, Microsoft Skype for Business, Windows 10/7, Commvault Enterprise Backup, VMware ESXi/vSphere, EMC VNX/Clarion Storage, Dell Compellent/Equallogic Storage, Hitachi Storage, and IBM iSeries


(current) MCSA required and MCSE preferred

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Recognize, troubleshoot and resolve system issues with minimal supervision

Work within a team environment to maintain various BIS Systems’ integrity
