Data Analyst’s Skillset and duties/responsibilities
Soft Skills:
Good communication skills, both oral and written are required for this job. Data analysts are often called to present their findings, or translate the data into an understandable document. You will need to write and speak clearly, easily communicating complex ideas.
Individual must have the willingness to work well with a team. Data analyst should have great interpersonal skills and the ability to manage people.
Ability to multi-task and perform in self-sufficient manner. Being able to manage your own workload and prioritize is essential.
Critical Thinking Skills: Data analysts must look at the numbers, trends, and data and come to new conclusions based on the findings. Data analysts work with large amounts of data: facts, figures, and number crunching. You will need to see through the data and analyze it to find conclusions.

Attention to Detail: Data is precise. Data analysts have to make sure they are vigilant in their analysis to come to correct conclusions.
Adherence to confidentiality principles. Maintains client confidence and protects operations by keeping information confidential.
Good judgment, initiative, commitment and resourcefulness.

Technical Skills:
Proficiency in MicroSoft Office suite - including Outlook, MSAccess, Word, Excel and Powerpoint
Proficiency with SQL Querying Language
Knowledge and experience about different types of databases (such as IMS, SQL server, Oracle, DB2, VSAM) and Database design structure
Math Skills: Data analysts need math skills to estimate numerical data.

Knowledge of basic toolsets - Hive, Impala, Hue, Sqoop. Mainframe knowledge (ISPF), working with XML and JSON formats. Knowledge of Syncsort a plus.

Working knowledge of data flow and process flow diagrams and related tools such as Visio, Data Modeling skills to create Entity Relationship Diagrams (ERD), Logical Modeling Experience and Physical Modeling Experience is required. Knowledge of ACORD data standards is a plus.
Working knowledge of the prevalent operating systems, programming languages and hardware platforms a plus.

Responsibilities/Duties
Perform Analysis: Understand the requirements of the client and study the various ways in which the requirements can be met. Thoroughly analyze the pros and cons of every solution before deciding on a best feasible solution.
Acts as liaison between information technology and business units - Cooperates closely with IT experts, project engineers and subject matter experts in planning and developing analytical methods for data collection, storage, analysis, statistics and presentations.
Identifies data sources within the Data Lake and Data Warehouse - Analyzes and extracts key data and information to meet the organization''s information system needs and requirements. Constructs data flow diagrams and documents that serve to make data relationships from source to target understandable.
Prepare and deliver technical documents and project plans that support software solutions: Formulate technical specifications, such as Batch Interface design specifications, test matrices, ERD diagrams, as well as project plans and tasks lists that define deliverables in support of solution.
Participates in various phases of testing including unit, end-to end and UAT: Assists and participates in data validation and cleaning to ensure the quality and integrity of data and software solution.
Support Data Quality and Data Governance: Work with internal and external team members to identify potential data anomalies.
Participate in SDLC sessions, including Business Requirements walkthrus, high and low level design sessions to confirm project requirements by studying user requirements; and conferring with others on project team (such as solutions architects) to ensure that proposed solution complies with technical architecture.
Maintains meta data/data dictionary (Business Glossary) by revising and entering definitions for key data elements.
Maintains technical knowledge by attending educational workshops; reviewing publications; establishing personal networks; participating in technical societies.
Experience:
Experience in the insurance or financial sector from a data management perspective
Expertise in data analysis methodologies and processes and their linkages to other processes in the software development lifecycle
Experience with integration efforts (packaged and customized applications) from a data analysis perspective
Expertise in various modeling techniques such as process, data and object modeling
Experience participating in data analysis efforts alone and also in teams of 3 or more
Participation in data analysis efforts for multiple projects and programs of different size and complexity
Experience mentoring junior staff in the data analysis discipline
Experienced in leading business users, and data analysts in data requirements gathering exercises
Experienced in various data requirements elicitation, analysis and validation techniques
Experience with structured development efforts in data analysis with compliance to CMMi Level 3 procedures
Expertise with data analysis artifacts and tools.
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience with digital/client & agent experience preferred
CDMP or equivalent certification preferred
Agile experience a plus
IBM tools experience a plus
Data analytics experience a plus
