The Network Consulting Engineer – Optical Networks, will plan, manage and prioritize key work initiatives for our customer, Cisco. The NCE will support various regions, define and provide technical oversight of MOP’s, develop project plans and lead network upgrades and new implementations on behalf of Cisco’s optical network clients. The NCE will provide Tier 3 Technical applications Center (TAC) support, consult with customers to provide optical network solutions, present solutions along with risks, costs and benefits and, share knowledge with the TAC team.


Essential Functions:

Maintain proficiency with the Cisco 15454, its variants and software releases

Create customer-specific test plans for fault duplication and isolation

Track faults, issues and feature requests,

Resolve customer-identified problems, participate in customer meetings, communicate progress clearly with upstream organizations

Provide feedback and suggest enhancements for inclusion in future product releases

Re-create customer issues in lab and assist in development of work-around and bug fixes


Other Functions:

Develop written technical documentation on the deploying Cisco optical network equipment

Use network protocols, networking software and hardware to correct system faults

Exercise strong analytical skills to debug, troubleshoot and isolate optical network problems

Develop and deliver in depth Method of Procedures (MOP) for maintenance activities

Review each release of Technical Documents for accuracy and completeness

Provide comprehensive technical analysis and audit of customer networks, audit report compilation and presentation to customer

Develop network specific migration strategies and procedures

Deliver hands-on technical assistance and troubleshooting for resolving customer hardware and software issues

Contributes and assist in development of Knowledge Base content

Reviews each release of Technical Documents for accuracy and completeness


Work Environment/Physical Demands:

Work will be performed in a TAC Center with cold air conditioning and a moderate background noise environment

Extensive and intricate work with a computer to resolve complex network issues

Extensive use of computerized software tools and programs

Prolonged sitting in an office chair


Required Education/Experience and Competencies:

BSEE/CS combined with 8+ years of related experience or MSEE/CS combined with 6+ years of related experience

CCIE level certification is preferred

Hands on experience with customer deployment and troubleshooting of optical networks and test equipment

Network Architecture and design principles including SONET, DWDM, CWDM, G.709 digital wrapper and, Mesh Topologies

Unix operating system, scripting

Excellent communication skills

Self-starter, proactive and must be able to handle multiple tasks
