By virtue of our FDA work, we are required to host our systems in a FISMA-compliant data center. We use a hosting company called QTS for that purpose. QTS provides a baseline of infrastructure support, but we provided most system administration functions ourselves - backups, disaster recovery planning and testing, software upgrades, log monitoring, hardware configuration, database administration. We are structured as a hybrid private cloud (please don''t ask me for details here, I''m not that technical), run Citrix Xen Servers to manage server clusters, database is Microsoft SQL Server. We are presently negotiating an extension to our hosting agreement that will include hardware refresh, so some experience dealing with hosting vendors would be useful.
