Position:- Infrastructure Engineer (Storage and Backup)
Duration:- 6+months C2h
Location:- Indianapolis, IN

REPORTS TO: Director Server and Storage

SUMMARY:
The Infrastructure Engineer – Storage and Backup is responsible to ensure storage and backup platforms are expertly delivered, optimized and supported during the entire infrastructure lifecycle. In this role, the Infrastructure Engineer – Storage and Backup works collaboratively with other architects, infrastructure engineers, applications teams and Technology Architecture & Business Development.

The Infrastructure Engineer – Storage and Backup will actively have a role in the following phases:

Design
Work with applications teams to analyze capacity and performance requirements needed to achieve agreed SLA
Work with vendors to create designs and configurations and translate these into BOMs (Bill of Materials) that satisfy requirements and meet budget objectives.
Designs must be aligned with the architectural directions, must follow industry and market best practices and must take into consideration supportability requirements defined by the Global Infrastructure team.
Act as a liaison between the business and architecture team to ensure business requirement coverage.
Implement
Coordinate implementation, testing and rollout into production of designed solutions.
Ensure that implementations adhere to original design and Provide SME leadership resolution of issues discovered during implementation while also considering discoveries impact on overall design.
Optimize
monitor performance and capacity utilization in order to optimize and tune the computing capacity allocation
Analyze details on operational issues that may require a design or implementation review/tuning.
Support
Provide support to resolution of major issues and outages that require the involvement of a Subject Matter Expert (SME) in computing technologies who is deeply knowledgeable.
Budgeting
Contribute to the budget planning and performance to budget for this specific area

Design:
Work with applications teams to analyze capacity and performances requirements needed to achieve agreed SLA with the business. Challenge users on requirements and suggest changes or alternatives to enhance the business environment, when appropriate.
Work with vendors to create designs and configurations that satisfy requirements
Translate designs and configurations into BOMs (Bills of Materials) that satisfy requirements and meet budget objectives.
Designs must be aligned with the architectural directions, must follow industry and market best practices and must take into considerations supportability requirements.
Designs should be efficient, allow for flexibility, and consider cross-platform usage and global requirements/functionality.
Creative in delivering value and carefully researched alternatives and system solutions to address customer/user requests.
Independently analyze business problems and operational data from one or more sources to formulate solutions of significant complexity. Responsible for identifying various technical alternatives and clearly defining user specifications.
Provide expertise in interpreting information which requires the research, development, and testing of new methods and/or concepts of analysis.
Consults with and coordinates with external vendors.
Participate in budget planning.
Responsible for acting as a technical consultant on general projects for the department.
Work with the business to help identify improvements to business operations from their technology areas.
Utilized as a resource by other groups within Ingram Micro, outside of this primary Subject Matter Expertise area. Can effectively participate on cross-functional teams.

Implementation:
Provide SME leadership in supporting the development and maintenance of project plans for projects.
Provide SME leadership or participate in the implementation activities, depending on the specific project.
Ensure all systems development adheres to, and maintains current applications development standards and methodologies.
Provide SME leadership or participate in the testing of implemented solutions before these are released and accepted into production, depending on the specific project.
Effectively coordinate with service provider and partners with their resources, as appropriate.

Optimize and Support:
Targets performance and configurations improvements through a thorough analysis of systems and processes.
Analyzes details on operational issues from the Operation Team that may require a design or implementation review/tuning,
Actively looks for opportunities to positively impact existing methods, services, or products.
Exhibits initiative to further develop technical and professional skills, by attending training and/or willingness to learn new systems or technologies in use by Ingram Micro Global IS.
Provide support to resolution of major issues and outages that require the involvement of an SME for Computing technologies.

Environment build out:
Participate in the data center build activities by deploying new server systems according to approved specifications
Maintain and create golden images to support server build activities
Remediate existing servers to ensure compliance with data center standards


JOB QUALIFICATIONS:
1. A Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Science and Math or related discipline with an IT emphasis is required. A graduate degree in Technology, Business or equivalent work experience is preferred
2. Minimum 5 years of continuous experience in the following:
Development, implementation, and maintenance of large-scale systems, preferably across multiple hardware and software platforms
Engineering roles in a large, complex, global environment
Strong verbal & written communications skills. Working knowledge of IT Service Management framework and/or ITIL concepts and practices. ITIL certification a plus.
Experience with Windows based operating systems (, Windows 2008,Windows 2012,)
Understanding of CPU and Memory technologies and roadmaps (Intel, AMD, Power8, etc)
Broad knowledge of computing technologies, blades and rack mounted Intel x86 and AMD based commodity servers, Enterprise class platforms – (Cisco UCS C- and B- series, IBM Power8, HP racks mountable and blade servers, Dell rack mountable and blade servers
Experience with tools, components, methodologies and protocols related to latest computing platforms particularly blades technologies (Cisco UCS Manager, Stateless configurations and Service Profiles, Unified Fabric concept, Converged Network Adapters & Fiber Channel over Ethernet)

Knowledge of both Server and Desktop Virtualization technologies (VMware, Citrix, IBM PowerVM, Microsoft
Good understanding of key virtualization concepts and how these are impacted by the computing platform.
Extensive experience in performance tuning and optimizing storage and backup platforms.
Deep understanding and experience in build large storage and backup solutions that scale for growth.
Detailed understanding of power and cooling requirements of enterprise and commodity servers to support data center cage design and implementation.
Deep knowledge and experience with :
i. Storage Technologies, Backup solutions and methodologies (EMC, HP, IBM, Hitachi), Storage area network solutions (Cisco, Brocade)
ii. Network technologies (Cisco Nexus solution, 7k, 5K, 1K),
iii. Systems and Infrastructure Management technologies (, BMC)
Strong understanding of high availability concepts with practical experience and implementation of key components (databases, application servers, fault tolerant systems, cluster server/software, etc
Understanding of Operational challenges and dependencies as they relate to infrastructure decisions.
Working Knowledge of TCP/IP, FTP, SMTP, SendMail, NFS, DNS, BIND and other Network services.
Experience with Enterprise applications and services
Sensitivity to Security best practices as related to infrastructure and application architectures.
5+ years of proven hands on experience with storage and backup technologies in a complex global environment with experience as L3 support via on-call rotation.
5+ years of experience in design, implementation, and maintenance of large-scale storage and backup infrastructure.
5+ years of proven hands on experience with configuration and troubleshooting various SAN technologies such as Cisco MDS and Brocade.
Recent hands on experience with EMC storage technologies (VMAX, VPLEX, RPA and UNITY) this includes experience with storage migrations using various methods like SRDF, VPLEX, host based, etc.
Recent hands on experience with other storage array vendors (IBM, Hitachi etc
Experience in designing, implementing and operating backup solutions with Data Domain, tape, and backup software (NetBackup, VEEAM, CommVault, etc
Experience with key storage tools, methodologies and protocols including Unisphere, RecoverPoint, snapshots, clones, Fiber Channel NFS, CIFS, thin provisioning and data migrations.
Experience in performance tuning and optimizing enterprise storage solutions
Understanding of Network Attached Storage (NAS) technologies.
Understanding of operational challenges and dependencies as they relate to infrastructure decisions.
Experience with IT Service Management framework and/or ITIL concepts and practices
Documentation skills to include creating and updating detailed storage environment design, installation, and support documentation.
