As data becomes an increasingly important asset to client and its customers, client is building out the team, technologies, processes and management disciplines to grow its competency in the data strategy and data governance areas.

The Enterprise Data Catalog (EDC) is one such technology contributing to this mission. The EDC is the system-of-record catalog for client’s data assets. Alongside the EDC system is the discipline of data stewardship – the process of cataloging, curating, and supervising the use of client’s data as it is utilized within and by the organization. This position is “Enterprise

Data Catalog System Owner and Enterprise Data Steward” and as such has two different, yet complementary, roles.

The first role – EDC System Owner – is to perform the hands-on technical configuration work to establish, configure, and maintain Client’s new Enterprise Data Catalog (EDC At first, the EDC System Owner will be responsible for building the EDC. To build the EDC will be to create the production instance, establish integrations between the EDC and targeted data systems, implement scheduled metadata ingestion processes, and deploy EDC to an end user community. The build part of the role picks up following a proof of concept, in which a limited version of the EDC was evaluated for use.

As the EDC is built, the role will take on and maintain and grow a set of responsibilities. These responsibilities will be to ensure the proper function of the EDC and create or update metadata connections with EDC as new data systems come on board at Client.

The second role – Enterprise Data Steward – is to serve the Client community as a deep, subject matter expert about Client’s data assets. As the Enterprise Data Steward, this individual will be a tremendous resource for product owners, strategists, analysts, data engineers, and technologists who need to understand Client’s data. Using the EDC, the Enterprise Data Steward will understand and have visibility to the location, origins, structure, condition, movement, lifecycle, and other attributes of Client’s data. In this unique, dual-faceted position, this individual will play an important role in the growth and delivery of Client’s Data Governance discipline.

The ideal candidate for this position will have strong familiarity with data catalogs, the practice of data cataloging, meta data management, and data curation. The person will be a quick learner, intrinsically motived, and able to produce high-quality output. This is a technical role. While hands-on coding of the EDC is not required, the individual must be able to identify when coding is required. He or she will need to write specifications, secure time with the developer, and ensure completion of the task.

This individual will work under the direction of the EDC system owner within Client Information Technology.
