SUMMARY OF POSITION:



The Laboratory Technician II position is an entry level position whose major purpose is to support the North Haven Laboratory Services Microbiology Group. This includes but is not limited to: media preparation support, monitoring and maintaining sterile laboratory supplies, laboratory maintenance, glassware and instrument cleaning via laboratory dishwasher. The Laboratory Technician II will also operate laboratory equipment, such as the autoclave and depyrogenating oven. This position may also perform biological indicator testing and 14-day sterility testing. The North Haven Laboratory Services Department located in Connecticut directly supports manufacturing locations worldwide. The Laboratory Technician II works both individually and as part of a team.



ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

1.            Follow standard operating procedures (SOPs) and become qualified to perform laboratory tasks through on the job training from team leader.

2.            Pipette various types of agar media, including petri dishes, RODAC plates, and air strips within a laminar flow hood.

3.            Perform various activities to support media preparation, such as leak testing, post-incubation inspections, tightening caps on media containers, and shifting media batches between incubation and storage.

4.            Perform product sterility testing and biological indicator testing and monitor samples for microbial growth during incubation period.

5.            Assist with preparation of surgical device samples for sterility testing by modifying and packaging them prior to sterilization and then sanitizing the samples with disinfectant prior to testing.

6.            Perform washroom duties, which entail emptying the contents of glassware and other various container types, and then washing them via laboratory dishwasher.

7.            Daily maintenance of laboratory organization and cleaning in the wash room, stock room, and other laboratory areas.

8.            Monitor and maintain inventory of depyrogenated supplies by wrapping instruments and other items associated to bacterial endotoxin testing.

9.            Utilize the depyrogenating oven, autoclaves, and other equipment in the laboratory for the sterilization of instruments, glassware, gowns, and microbiological trash.

10.          Perform regular cleaning and maintenance of the laboratory sterility suites.

11.          Prepare, distribute, and maintain rotation of validated laboratory disinfectants.

12.          Monitor, drain, and clean laboratory water baths.

13.          Assist Microbiologist or designee with supply inventory receipt, application of inventory labels, and inventory organization.

14.          Catalog and dispose of scrap product and testing samples.

15.          Monitor and maintain broken glass disposal boxes and sharps disposal bins.

16.          Review monthly calibration list and submit gauges/instruments for calibration to internal Metrology department or send to a contract calibration lab.

17.          Perform daily monitoring of laboratory differential pressure gauges and purified water system.

18.          Provide assistance to other Microbiologists as needed.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:



Education:           High school diploma required.

Experience:        Minimum 2 years of previous wet lab work experience required.

Skills/Qualifications:        Proficiency with aseptic technique and pipetting. Experience with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook) required.

Skills/Competencies:      Listening, Demonstrated Communication Skills (both written and verbal), Organization, Time Management, Planning Skills, Reliable and Responsible, Capable of Independently Working.



ORGANIZATIONAL RELATIONSHIPS/SCOPE:



The Laboratory Technician II position reports directly to the Associate Microbiologist III. The Laboratory Technician II will have frequent contact with Microbiologists and other specialists within the North Haven Laboratory Services Department. The work performed by the Laboratory Technician II will directly affect both corporate, divisional, and plant functions in a work-related capacity.



WORKING CONDITIONS:



The Laboratory Technician II position will be exposed to the following work environments: office and controlled environmental laboratory/manufacturing conditions, some warehouse environment, exposure to sterilized product, moderate lifting, and working with microorganisms. The Laboratory Technician II position is a highly active position with frequent standing, walking, kneeling, crouching, balancing, and occasional climbing. Frequent use of eye, hand, and finger coordination enabling use of laboratory equipment. Oral and auditory capacity enabling interpersonal communication as well as communication through automated devices such as telephone and e-mail. Moderate physical effort required by handling objects up to 50 pounds frequently.



Occasional: Activity exists less than 1/3 of the time.

Frequent: Activity exists between 1/3 and 2/3 of the time.
