Description:
Position is primarily responsible for research, design, planning, and implementation of complex computational infrastructure projects requiring a high degree of technical knowledge and systems integration experience. Position is considered a technical expert who is responsible for all aspects of one or more mission-critical technical IT services.
Position is challenged with establishing and maintaining a high level of credibility and quality for services provided by the IT department. In meeting these challenges the Senior System Administrator constantly evaluates, designs, plans, implements, and supports the activities related to these functions. A large majority of time is spent on project work, with operational support responsibilities as needed when expertise is required to solve difficult problems.
Documents, plans, designs, implements, supports, maintains, monitors and plans for capacity of all aspects of an enterprise based environment. Documents system design and administration procedures.
Installs operating system, servers, and third party software installation. Conducts upgrades and maintenance. Installs hardware and software.
Researches potential IT solutions in response to Department goals and priorities. Meets with customers to define needs and translate them into technical solutions.
Acts independently to lead the design and implementation of complex systems that provide reliable, scalable services often using a combination of different technologies. Coordinates with senior management as needed to address questions, particularly regarding strategy or finances.
Conducting regular technical review and planning meetings to help coordinate the group’s efforts. Builds and maintains project timelines; works with other departments and groups to ensure a quality result. Acts as a Project Manager through self-directed projects and those being implemented by other technical leads within the IT Department.
Contributes feedback to defining policies and procedures in the areas of Disaster Recovery, Enterprise Backups, Systems Management, Monitoring and Systems Administration/Security, Build Standards, and Server Build Automation.
Conducts configuration and storage management. Performs performance tuning and diagnostics at the application, operating system or network level to enhance or preserve functional capacity.
Serves as a technical expert for one or more mission-critical systems (which may involve multiple technologies); resolve issues forwarded by junior staff.
Negotiates and sets priorities with end-users and department personnel when resolving problems with IT hardware and software.
Respond to operations escalation tickets promptly and document solutions. Participates in IT on-call rotation - nights and weekends.

Requirements:
Bachelor’s degree in computer science or other engineering field or equivalent combination of education and related experience in the IT field.
Minimum of five years of desktop and laptop computer and server equipment experience in a Macintosh and Windows environment or a minimum of six years of systems administration experience with relevant architecture (UNIX or Windows
Knowledge of the use of tape silos, high speed tape devices, systems monitors and system tuning a plus.
Position will focus on either UNIX or Windows. UNIX Focus: 5+ years'' experience installing and implementing Solaris, RedHat Linux and third party software products.
Must be willing to work in an animal-related research environment.
Must be able to work a flexible schedule based on workload and incident response. Has some on-call responsibilities to include evenings, weekends and holiday coverage as needed.
Required technical skills for Windows focus:
o Server 2003 MCSE or later
o Windows server/application performance trending and health monitoring.
o Expert level knowledge of Microsoft AD including but not limited to GPO, schema, registry, CLI with AD.
o Solid understanding of LDAP and be able to program or script for LDAP administration and management.
o Expert level knowledge of networking as it applies to Microsoft technologies and architecture.
o Solid understanding of security as it applies to Microsoft technologies.
o Solid understanding of administration scripts and language such as VB, Powershell, bash, awk, etc.
o Solid understanding of the mail system including the Microsoft Exchange, standard SMTP, programming or scripting to automate the Monitoring, integration of the SMTP mail flow and MAPI applications.
Required technical skills for UNIX focus:
o Knowledge of AIX, Solaris, RedHat Linux
o Knowledge of Netbackup and TSM
o Knowledge of Unix mail systems (postfix, spamassassin)
Required for either Windows or UNIX:
o Knowledge of storage system architectures and configuration: RAID, Fiberchannel, iSCSI.
